Pearl Farm Tours

While pearls have been revered through the ages for their natural beauty and simple elegance, their appearance belies an often-complex process involved in producing them, one that requires the careful nurturing of oysters in a susceptible ocean environment.

Experience the journey of our unique Fiji coloured pearls, which start as tiny nucleuses imbedded into the flesh of black-lipped oysters and end up as fine jewellery in some of the world’s best showrooms, when you take a tour of our flagship farm and showroom in Fiji.

Located in the small bay town of Savusavu on Vanua Levu, Fiji’s large northern island, J. Hunter’s pearl farm is just a five minute boat ride away from the thriving small-town community.

Your tour begins in our showroom with a short, 15-minute presentation on the history of the cultured pearl and how J. Hunter has adapted the process by one of our experienced pearl graders. From here, guests are taken out to the undersea farm in a glass-bottomed boat to view the pearl oyster culture. Snorkelling over the farm is an option, however, guests must bring their own gear.

On this 40 minute cruise, you will see pearl oysters at different stages of growth, suspended on 200 metre long lines that run 3 – 5 metres below the ocean’s surface. The boat also comes alongside one of the cleaning platforms where you can observe farm workers cleaning and checking on the health of juvenile and adult oysters.

During the seeding times of the year (April/May and October/November) you will also have the opportunity to witness our highly qualified pearl technicians implanting and harvesting pearls from the oysters. The tour ends back in our showroom, where we have a wide selection of pearl jewelry and loose pearls on display, and available for purchase.

Farm tours cost $50 Fijian per person and run twice daily at 9.30am and 1.30pm from Monday to Friday. Bookings can be made through your resort or at our Showroom (679 8850-821).

Located on Naverea Road in Savusavu Town the J. Hunter Pearl Showroom can also be visited outside of tours. It opens Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm and Saturday from 8am to noon. It is closed on Sunday and public holidays.

The showroom is licensed for the VAT Tourist Refund Scheme whereby all purchases over $500 Fijian are eligible for a 15% tax refund upon departure from Nadi International Airport.

Savusavu is a convenient flight or sail from Fiji’s main island Viti Levu. There are connecting flights from Nadi International Airport and from Nausori outside the capital city of Suva or by one of the several ferry services that service Vanua Levu, Fiji’s second largest island.
